Liu Qiangdong, the founder and chief executive of Chinese internet and ecommerce group JD.com, has been arrested after a complaint of sexual assault in the US state of Minnesota.

The 45-year-old Chinese entrepreneur, who goes by the English name Richard, is behind one of China’s largest ecommerce platforms, second only to Alibaba’s Taobao. JD.com went public in New York in 2014 and today has a $46bn market capitalisation.

Mr Liu is one of the country’s richest businessmen, with an estimated Rmb70bn ($10bn) in personal wealth, according to the Hurun Report.

A jail roster showed he was released from the Hennepin County jail on Saturday after being arrested by local police.

The case involved Mr Liu and a Chinese student at the University of Minnesota and allegedly occurred during a business trip to the US, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter.

This marks the second time the billionaire has been connected to a sexual assault case. The New York Times reported in July that Mr Liu was named as the host of a party in Australia at which an alleged sexual assault case took place. He was not accused of any wrongdoing in that situation.

JD.com confirmed that the company leader had recently been detained by Minnesota police. It said in a statement: “During a business trip to the United States, Mr Liu was questioned by police in Minnesota in relation to an unsubstantiatedaccusation. The local police quickly determined there was no substance to the claim against Mr Liu, and he was subsequently able to resume his business activities as originally planned.”

A company spokesperson added: “Rumours on social media about Mr Liu are all untrue. The police have done their investigation and found nothing against Mr Liu. He is now to continue his business visit with full freedom.”

However, John Elder, public information officer for the Minneapolis Police Department said: “The investigation is ongoing.”

He added: “The statute of limitations is our only deadline at this point.”

Mr Elder said that had the police continued to hold Mr Liu, local rules would have required the department to file a complaint by Tuesday midday. “He was released pending formal complaint and that is most often done without bail needing to be set,” he said.

In an interview with the Financial Times last year, Mr Liu voiced his ambition for JD.com to become the largest B2C (business to consumer) platform in China in five years. “We will surpass any competitor,” he said.
