Child: How do we get a cold anyway?

Mom: Well, the common cold is a kind of respiratory infection.

Respiratory讀作 [ˈrespərətɔ:ri]。
It comes from a certain kind of germ called a virus .
它來自一種叫做病毒的病菌。
Child: What's the difference between germ, virus, and bacteria?
寶寶：病菌、病毒和細菌有什麼區別啊？
Mom: Both virus and
bacteria are germs.媽媽：病毒和細菌都是病菌。
Bacteria are living germs, some helpful, some harmful.
細菌是活的病菌，一些有益，一些有害。
Bacteria是複數，單數形式是bacterium。
A virus is a bad germ that causes illnesses.
病毒是會導致生病的有害的病菌，
We come in contact with these germs more often than you would think!
我們和這些病菌的接觸比你想象的要頻繁！
Door handles, appliances, pencils, and toys are all things that could have those germs on them,
門把手、電器、鉛筆和玩具等東西上都可能有這些病菌，
since many people touch them.

Child: So how do the germs get on the different things?

Do our bodies just make viruses?

Mom: Good question.

Our bodies can carry those germs

and we pass them on through snot and spit, coughs and sneezes,

(1) 無意識流出來的口水叫drool，能控制的口水叫spit，傳播疾病的口水主要是人們有意識吐出來的痰。
(2) 痰在嗓子裡叫phlegm，吐出來的痰，口語中用spit。

Child: What about the coronavirus?
寶寶：冠狀病毒呢？
Coronavirus讀作 [kə,rəunə'vaiərəs]。
Mom: That is actually a tad more severe.
媽媽：實際上它更嚴重。
A tad = a little = a bit
Child: What does "severe" mean?
寶寶：什麼是“嚴重”？
Mom: It means something is more serious or great.
媽媽：它的意思是程度更深、影響更大。
Like severe weather is bad weather.
比如惡劣天氣就是壞天氣。
Child: Okay, so what makes the coronavirus a respiratory disease?
寶寶：好的，那為什麼冠狀病毒會成為呼吸道疾病呢？
Mom: It is more severe in the way our bodies react and what the virus does to those it infects.
媽媽：我們身體的反應更大，它對感染者的危害也更大。
It is more damaging and harder on the body
它具有更強的破壞性，對身體的危害更大，
and can lead to death .
並能導致死亡。
It also takes a little longer to recover from it.
也需要更久的時間才能恢復。
Child: Oh, okay.
寶寶：哦，好的。
Mom: But it still comes from a virus.
Let's go wash our hands

to get rid of those bad germs!
