我們一直強調，讀外刊和原著對於學好英語非常重要。
因為在英語中，一個單詞的用法和含義極其靈活，背過一個單詞和掌握一個單詞是兩個完全不同的概念。前者基本沒什麼用，後者讓你能理解，會運用。而想徹徹底底掌握一個單詞必須要到具體語境中體會。
今天為大家帶來的是《經濟學人》二月週刊，文章標題為 “A Deadly Disease Disrupts”,譯作《惡疾之擾》。這篇文章主要講的是：
這次爆發的新型冠狀病毒對全球經濟鏈條的影響。大多數跨國企業和巨頭由於高度依賴中國的供應鏈，對於新型冠狀病毒的衝擊未能倖免，被迫停產；
多國來往中國的航班和旅遊行程取消；
許多為拉動國家經濟舉辦的國際會議，也由於參會公司相繼退出而取消。
這次疫情的影響會持續很久，但也將讓多數跨國公司重新審視他們的供應鏈管理策略。
接下來我們將摘選幾個精彩段落為大家精講：
To glimpse the impact of the new coronavirus on global businesses, consider Apple. Such is the American tech titan's reliance on the Chinese mainland for parts and assembly that United Airlines typically shuttles some 50 of its executives between California and China each day. But not at the moment. United and other carries have suspended flights to and from China. 要一窺新型冠狀病毒對全球企業的影響，看看蘋果就行了。
【解析】
這句話表示了兩個信息：
第一，這篇文章要講新冠病毒對全球貿易的影響；第二，蘋果的近期狀況可以作為全球企業縮影用以介紹。To glimpse...在這裡是非謂語作目的狀語，這句話的謂語為consider。
new coronavirus，新型冠狀病毒，也可作novel coronavirus。
business不僅是生意，還有事務、公司的意思。
To glimpse the impact of..., consider... 要一窺……的影響，只要看看……就夠了。
這是個很好的句型，其中impact和省略號部分都可以根據寫作需求隨意替換，可以用於議論文開頭。比如，要寫成長中企業如何轉變營銷策略方向：
To glimpse the the ways marketing strategies have changed in developing businesses, consider Alibaba.

這家美國科技巨頭高度依賴中國大陸為其製造零部件和組裝產品，每天通常都有約50名蘋果高管乘坐美聯航的航班往返加州和中國。
【解析】
titan，偉人，巨擘； tech titan，科技大亨。
這個詞如果你直接去查電子詞典，搜出來的結果一般都是太陽神，巨人，或者直接音譯泰坦，你一定會雲裡霧裡的。但是從文章裡學習就能明白它的用法了，它和giant一樣，一般表示大亨、大牛。比如你想說"文學大亨"，就是literature titan。Tech titan經常會出現在現在的文章和雜誌裡，畢竟當前是互聯網時代了嘛。
reliance，信賴，信心，依賴。
mailand，大陸，本土。《經濟學人》經常會出現Chinese mainland，或者直接用mainland指代中國大陸。下次遇見這個詞，如果文章與中國相關，那這個詞多半就是指中國。
assembly，裝配，組裝。不要看這個單詞是-ly結尾，它是一個貨真價實的名詞。
typically，在這裡不能譯作典型地，而要譯作通常，一般。它和always、usually含義上沒有太大區別，但typically有約定俗成的意味在裡頭，更加書面化。所以以後你再想表達"通常"，就有了高級替換詞了。
shuttle，短程穿梭運送。這又是一個不在語境中出現你就看不懂的詞。可以譯作頻繁往來，美聯航的航班每天運送50個左右的蘋果高管往返於加尼福亞洲和中國。
executive, 經理，主管領導。在雜誌中出現時，多指代高管。CEO，中的E就是這個詞，chief executive officer,首席執行官。
這裡有個兩個句型可以學習：

such... that... 如此……以至於……，在這裡就是為了說明蘋果太過於依賴中國工廠，所以有許多出差往來。但要記住，such後接的句子需要倒裝，就是such後要直接跟謂語。可以先替換一下名詞部分感受它的用法。
United Airlines typically shuttles some 50 of its executives between California and China each day.
... shuttles... between... and...
……乘坐……往返於……和……
記住，雖然為了方便理解這麼翻譯，但shuttle是個主動詞，前面的主語要是航班名。

但眼下不一樣了。美聯航等航空公司已經暫停了往返中國的航班。由於工人短缺，春節假期結束以後，包攬全球大部分iPhone製造的中國工廠富士康無法讓組裝廠自上週起恢復滿額生產。
【解析】
But not at the moment，但眼下不一樣了。這句話針對的是前一段說的情況，如果你們寫作時要使用，記得前文一定要先描述之前的慣況。
other carries，指代其他航空公司。carry不僅可以譯作航空公司，也可以當作物流公司的統稱使用。
suspend，暫停，中止。 ... have suspended ...
a lack of ...，缺少......。
lunar new-year holiday，春節假期
capacity，中學通常只教它"能力"的意思，但實際上，它出現得更多的時候表示容量、生產力。full capacity，滿負荷生產能力，也就是開足馬力的意思，
學習這些單詞和短語最好還是以句子為單位結合語境學，像這一段我們就可以提煉出這樣一個句子套，用在作文裡震驚考官：
But not at the moment. ... have suspended .... A lack of ... meant that ...
當你想闡述當前某個事情的現狀，就可以試著使用這個"套"。

Analysts reckon that the virus could lead to Apple shipping 5%-10% fewer iPhones this quarter and could scupper its plans to ramp up production of its popular AirPods.
分析人士估計，新冠狀病毒可能會導致本季度iPhone出貨量減少5%-10%，並可能令暢銷產品AirPods的增產計劃泡湯。
【解析】
reckon，認為，估計，猜想。以後寫議論文闡述他方觀點時，不要再用think，advise，可以用reckon。
lead to，導致。這裡的to詞性是介詞，所以後面只能跟名詞或者動名詞。shipping，運輸，在此就指水路運輸的出口量。
scupper，使船沉沒，突襲。其實英語裡很多詞語使用起來，就像我們中文的比喻一樣，它可以使用動詞直接比喻一些情況。scupper its plans，擊落它的計劃，也就是使計劃泡湯。
ramp up，這個詞組尤指產能增加，所以後面常跟production。
最後我們來提煉句子套：
... reckon that ... could lead to ... and could scupper its plans to ramp up production of ...
記住，套句子只是為了讓我們更好地熟悉和記憶新單詞的具體用法，不一定你的每篇文章都要"讓計劃泡湯"或者"提升產量"。熟悉之後的活用才是最重要的。
