①在···以上，高於；超過（表示職位、數量、年齡等）， 如：
He is the man above her.
他是她的上司。
The stone weighs above one ton.l9 0
這塊石頭重一噸多。
She is above fifty years old. 她今年50多歲了。
②在···上方，高出（表示位置）， 如：
The whole sky above us is filled with stars.
我們頭頂上的天空中佈滿了星星。
The plane is flying above the clouds.
飛機在雲層上面飛行。
③可代替beyond表“超越，越過···之外；不屑於（表示品質、行為、能力等，但不常用）”，如：
The book is above me(or my understanding).
這本書我讀不懂。
His ability is above the common people.
他能力超群。
She is above other students in the class.
她的學習成績超過班上其他學生。
【辨析】英語中表示“在···的上面／下面”的介詞有on, over, under, above, below, 試比較：
on, over與 above 意為“在··之上”：
（1)on多用於與物體有接觸時，位於物體的表面、邊上、線上，如：
on the table 在桌子上
on the wall 在牆上
on the other side of 在···的另一邊
on the left 在左邊nose ii
on the train 在火車上
（2)above 側重於指上下位置，有對比或參照物，如：
The picture is above the map.
那幅畫在地圖上方。
The mountain is about 2 000 meters above the
sea level. 那座山海拔約有2000米。
（3)over 側重於指橫跨兩端，或有覆蓋的含義，如：
Hang the picture over the bookshelf.
把這張畫掛在書架上面。
She spread a cloth over the table.eu:
她在桌上鋪了一塊桌布。
There is a bridge over the river.
在河的上邊橫跨一座橋。
under與 below意為“在···之下”：
（1)under與 below 均可表“正下方”， 如：
The water reached a few inches below/under the
knees. 水離膝蓋只有幾英寸了。
（2)表示“低於···”時僅用 below, 此時與 above 為反義，如：
The temperature today is below 0C.obI
今天的溫度在攝氏零度以下。是酚血聯不先
below the sea level 海拔以下
below the freezing point 冰點以下
（3)只用under的情況，如：
play under the tree 在樹下玩
carry sth under one's arms
在胳膊下夾著東西
pass under the bridge 在橋下淌過“不費
put sth under the bed 在···放在床下
