熟詞偏義是英語中常見的情況，
看似每個單詞都認識，
連在一起就不知道是什麼意思了！
比如下面這個表達↓↓
put my foot in my mouth
foot 是“腳”，mouth 是“嘴巴”
難道這個表達的意思是“把腳放進嘴巴里”嗎？
怎麼歪果仁會有這麼奇葩的行為？
未免也太重口味了吧！
經常看美劇的童鞋可能見過這個表達，
那它究竟是什麼意思呢？
當歪果仁說：I put my foot in my mouth
你可千萬不要以為他有什麼惡俗的怪癖，
真的把腳放進嘴裡了，
他只是為自己說錯話而道歉。
put one's foot in one's mouth
英文釋義：To put your foot in your mouth means you say something inappropiate that you shouldn't have said.
在不合適的時機說了不該說的話
意思是：（言語）使人尷尬，冒犯別人
Oh my god! I just put my foot in my mouth! I asked a woman on the bus when her baby was due,but she wasn't pregnant!
天吶！我剛剛說錯話了！我問一個女人她的預產期是什麼時候，但是她根本沒懷孕！
I really put my foot in my mouth – I asked her if Jane was her mother, but she said Jane is her sister.
我真的讓自己無地自容：我問她簡是不是她母親，但是她說簡是她姐姐。

Chandler 去搭訕這個女孩，發現這個女孩就是Joey 的新女友，於是他恨不得把剛剛說過的搭訕的話全都“吃掉”
那麼，這裡的 large feet 和 bigger mouth 要怎麼理解呢？這句話該怎麼翻譯呢？
get my exceptionally large feet into my even bigger mouth 其實想表達的就是：我說錯話了，實在太尷尬了，恨不得把腳塞進大嘴裡！

01.
have one's heart in one's mouth
意思是：心都提到嗓子眼了，提心吊膽，害怕
早在幾千年前就出現在荷馬的史詩《伊利亞特》中，就有這個說法了。當很緊張很害怕的時候，心會撲通撲通跳得很厲害，感覺就像要從嗓子裡蹦出來一樣，所以就有了 have one's heart in one's mouth 的說法。
The little boy stood outside the door of the headmaster's room and had his heart in his mouth, afraid to go in.
小男孩擔心吊膽地站在校長室門口，不敢進去。
I had my heart in my mouth as I waited for the ambulance to arrive.
在等待救護車的時候我很害怕，心都提到嗓子眼了。

shoot your mouth off
美國俚語，字面意思是“嘴裡開槍”
shoot 作動詞，
它實際表達的意思是：誇誇其談，吹牛
Stop shooting your mouth off. Nobody believes you any more.
別再瞎吹了！沒人再相信你了！

put one's head into the lion's mouth
把頭放進獅子的嘴裡無異於在拿自己的生命冒險所以這個俗語表示：冒不必要的險，把自己置身險境
Walking along the back of a high and narrow wall is just to take the bear by the tooth.
僅僅為了賣弄就在高而窄的牆上行走，那就是拿生命當兒戲了。
I think you’re putting your head in the lion’s mouth by speeding in such torrential rain.
我覺得你在這種暴雨裡開快車是極其危險的。

look a gift horse in the mouth
俗話說馬好不好要看牙口通過牙口，
可以大概判斷年齡，
（look a horse in the mouth）
但假如這馬是別人免費送的（a gift horse），
那再檢查牙口就有些不近情理了。
收到禮物不懂得感恩，
那就是對別人不禮貌、不尊重。
所以這個表達的意思是：吹毛求疵、過於挑剔
never look a gift horse in the mouth
不要拒絕別人的好意
Susan sometimes will look a gift horse in the mouth.
蘇珊有時候會吹毛求疵。
A：But I don't want this ancient car!
但是我不想要這輛事故車！
B：I can't believe you're looking a gift horse in the mouth, especially since you can't afford to buy a car on your own!
我簡直不敢相信你會如此挑剔，尤其是當你自己還買不起車的時候。
