熟词偏义是英语中常见的情况，
看似每个单词都认识，
连在一起就不知道是什么意思了！
比如下面这个表达↓↓
put my foot in my mouth
foot 是“脚”，mouth 是“嘴巴”
难道这个表达的意思是“把脚放进嘴巴里”吗？
怎么歪果仁会有这么奇葩的行为？
未免也太重口味了吧！
经常看美剧的童鞋可能见过这个表达，
那它究竟是什么意思呢？
当歪果仁说：I put my foot in my mouth
你可千万不要以为他有什么恶俗的怪癖，
真的把脚放进嘴里了，
他只是为自己说错话而道歉。
put one's foot in one's mouth
英文释义：To put your foot in your mouth means you say something inappropiate that you shouldn't have said.
在不合适的时机说了不该说的话
意思是：（言语）使人尴尬，冒犯别人
Oh my god! I just put my foot in my mouth! I asked a woman on the bus when her baby was due,but she wasn't pregnant!
天呐！我刚刚说错话了！我问一个女人她的预产期是什么时候，但是她根本没怀孕！
I really put my foot in my mouth – I asked her if Jane was her mother, but she said Jane is her sister.
我真的让自己无地自容：我问她简是不是她母亲，但是她说简是她姐姐。

Chandler 去搭讪这个女孩，发现这个女孩就是Joey 的新女友，于是他恨不得把刚刚说过的搭讪的话全都“吃掉”
那么，这里的 large feet 和 bigger mouth 要怎么理解呢？这句话该怎么翻译呢？
get my exceptionally large feet into my even bigger mouth 其实想表达的就是：我说错话了，实在太尴尬了，恨不得把脚塞进大嘴里！

have one's heart in one's mouth
意思是：心都提到嗓子眼了，提心吊胆，害怕
早在几千年前就出现在荷马的史诗《伊利亚特》中，就有这个说法了。当很紧张很害怕的时候，心会扑通扑通跳得很厉害，感觉就像要从嗓子里蹦出来一样，所以就有了 have one's heart in one's mouth 的说法。
The little boy stood outside the door of the headmaster's room and had his heart in his mouth, afraid to go in.
小男孩担心吊胆地站在校长室门口，不敢进去。
I had my heart in my mouth as I waited for the ambulance to arrive.
在等待救护车的时候我很害怕，心都提到嗓子眼了。

shoot your mouth off
美国俚语，字面意思是“嘴里开枪”
shoot 作动词，
它实际表达的意思是：夸夸其谈，吹牛
Stop shooting your mouth off. Nobody believes you any more.
别再瞎吹了！没人再相信你了！

put one's head into the lion's mouth
把头放进狮子的嘴里无异于在拿自己的生命冒险所以这个俗语表示：冒不必要的险，把自己置身险境
Walking along the back of a high and narrow wall is just to take the bear by the tooth.
仅仅为了卖弄就在高而窄的墙上行走，那就是拿生命当儿戏了。
I think you’re putting your head in the lion’s mouth by speeding in such torrential rain.
我觉得你在这种暴雨里开快车是极其危险的。

look a gift horse in the mouth
俗话说马好不好要看牙口通过牙口，
可以大概判断年龄，
（look a horse in the mouth）
但假如这马是别人免费送的（a gift horse），
那再检查牙口就有些不近情理了。
收到礼物不懂得感恩，
那就是对别人不礼貌、不尊重。
所以这个表达的意思是：吹毛求疵、过于挑剔
never look a gift horse in the mouth
不要拒绝别人的好意
Susan sometimes will look a gift horse in the mouth.
苏珊有时候会吹毛求疵。
A：But I don't want this ancient car!
但是我不想要这辆事故车！
B：I can't believe you're looking a gift horse in the mouth, especially since you can't afford to buy a car on your own!
我简直不敢相信你会如此挑剔，尤其是当你自己还买不起车的时候。
