WHAT IS MOISTMEDIA?

Today, many artists are interested in the biology in nature, biological processes

whether study DNA in the way that DNA informs the development of tissue of biological forms and our own bodies and so on,

or whether it is other aspects of cellular activities,

microscopically observed aspects of living systems on the one hand

on the other hand, artists are of course using computers as well as all kinds of new technologies to examine nature.

So, one, the computers are very dry, the silicon dry so as to speak,

and the biology itself, the biological processes are wet,

so if we put the dry and wet together we create this word moistmedia,

the new kind of media that is involved with artists who are interested in the biological field as the basis of the development of their art.

IS MOISTMEDIA THE SAME AS BIO ART?

可以说是in one sense, they probably are,但我创造并且更喜欢用“湿媒体”这个词的原因but the reason that I develop this term moistmedia, that I prefer to use that,和艺术家们在直接与自然接触的过程中涉及的新发展有关relative to these new developments the artists are engaged in, involving nature directly. It is that I always want to talk about the tools, the technologies that we use to encounter nature,我们通过图像、声音、振动或者是任何其他和技术相关的形式对其进行解读through image, sound or vibration or whatsoever that is picked up and recognized and worked with technologies,其中深度涉及前端技术advanced technologies are very much involved,生物艺术当然也是这样的情况

they are certainly in bio art as well,但我认为“生物艺术”把范围限制在了与自然的直接合作but I think the term bio art seems to me a little bit restricted as a form directly working with nature.然而现实不止于此it isn’t just that.我更喜欢湿媒体是因为它拓宽了这个领域but I prefer moistmedia, as I say to open up the field,让大家通过技术来尝试不同的可能性,用新的形式去看、去触摸、去达到、去改变、去转化。to exercise all the possibilities of new ways of seeing, touching, reaching, changing, transforming through technologies. And by technologies by the way, I am not simply talking about this sort of metal, or wiring or something like that,我也是在谈论化学I am talking about chemistry as well. THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS OF THE MOISTMEDIA

so what we would call moistmedia in art or bio art

started I suppose really in 1996 significantly in southern Australia,

Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr together, had a group called Tissue Culture & Art,

主要利用活体组织去创造新的形态,and thiswas really involved with working with living tissue in the studio to create newforms,是非常具有试验性的项目veryexperimental work. And forexample, a kind of meat was produced out of this process这个后来也成为了工作室的一部分活动 (持续性项目)which thenform part of the performance in the studio and so on.

those are very simple experiments, but quite dramatic. Since then, artists from many parts of the world, China, Europe, North America are looking in the ways they can work with nature,不是去干扰或者是说优化自然not to interfere with nature, not to somehow improve nature,而是思考如何利用创意的形式去参与自然的过程to see how they can be engaged in a creative way with processes of nature,这也是我为什么引进湿媒体这个词汇and this is of course what I would call moistmedia因为通常它不仅包含了“湿”的生化过程because it very often involves on the one hand wet, biological processes,更包含计算系统这样的硅性干燥and on the other hand, dry, silicon dry computational systems,湿媒体将这些新技术与自然本身的智慧结合在一起but that bring together these new technologies, and the wisdom of nature itself,帮助艺术家们寻求创意表达的不同路径try to find ways for expressing these creativities of these artists,这是一个艺术发展的重要时刻,so this is the significant moment in the development of art当然也不止是艺术art is not the only one of course,还有新技术的发展which involves new technologies,让很多艺术家都对其产生了浓厚的兴趣but it is the moment is growing out something considerable interest to artists from many parts of the world.

WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP OF BIO ART(MOISTMEDIA)?

在我看来,湿媒体或者生物艺术的下一发展阶段in my view, the next sort of development, beyond moistmedia, bio art是“制药”,也就是对“脑化学”的探索这个其实在远古社会就已经被彻底验证了which actually has been thoroughly examined in what we would like to see as primitive early societies,现如今世界上依旧有很多地方which are still sustained in many parts of the world now在运用植物、自然或者是自然的产物去直接转化意识using plants, using nature, using the products of nature to transform consciousness directly,这是个有待艺术家深入考察的领域that is an area yet fully to be examined by artists,我个人认为如果我们在讨论艺术的阶段性,那么“制药”(脑化学)一定会是下一个艺术家们会选择的道路but I do think if we will be talking about stages in art, that will be the next move some artists will be making,这个领域将随着媒体艺术,计算机艺术 (所有我们加诸于技术的术语)共同发展that will be developed in the way that media art developed, computer art, all these sort of terms we have applied to technologies,化学技术that technology of chemistry,是我认为实现所有意识、感官转化体验可能性的核心推进力量It is the next I think on the agenda that really forwards all sorts of possibilities of the transformation of the experience by the mind, in the senses.
