“母姓”与“父姓”相对，是指母亲这边的家族姓氏，即the mother’s family name。（“母系的”为maternal，“母姓”即是maternal surname。）
“千百年来”词组为for thousands of years，其也是for+一段时间，是现在完成时的时间标志。而且千百年来，父姓一直传承下去，并且会继续传下去，应该用现在完成时，表示过去发生的动作持续到现在，并可能还要继续下去。
“传承“的词组用pass down。
“世代相传“是指从一代传到下一代，代代相传。”从…到…“用from… to…，所以”世代相传“为from generation to generation。
我本想着可以用and连接两个并列句子，那么用and连接的两个谓语时态也得一致。
但是前半部分句子的时态用一般现在时，后半部分的句子时态得用现在完成时，不能用and连接，所以要把这一个句子拆分成两个句子。
第二句的译文为“The characteristic of Chinese name is that first name comes first, followed by given name. For thousands of years, the father’s family name has passed down from generation to generation.”
