這個成語從字面上看頗有點離奇。一個人怎麼會吃行頭都掉下來了呢？對它的出典，沒有十分確實的說法，只能作些猜測。它原來大概是描述一些動物，尤其是鳥類，吃個不停，以致最後 連頭都垂下了(eat until one’s head drops off)， 逐漸演變成eat one’s head off這樣的表達方式。不論它是怎麼產生的，它現在的意義是清楚的，即“吃得很多”。現在它不僅可用於動物，也可以用於人。自然，這並不是一種很恭敬的說法：
I do not know that he keeps two horses in the stable, doing nothing but eating their heads off.
我不知道他在馬廄裡養了兩匹什麼事也不幹，卻飽食終日的馬。
Father had a hard time to provide for a big family with three growing boys, all whom ate their heads off.
父親要維持一個大家庭很不容易，其中還有三個正在發育的男孩，吃起東西來，胃口驚人。
Faced with a table of goodies they forgot their table manners and ate their heads off.
面對一桌美食，他們顧不得什麼吃相，大吃起來。
