跟美國朋友聊天， 他說了一句：There is always a bad apple in every batch. 你是不是就理解為“每批蘋果裡都有一個壞的。”
但是他可不會莫名其妙蹦出這麼一句話，實際上他想表達的意思是：到哪兒都會有害群之馬。
bad apple在這裡不是“壞蘋果”， 而是“壞傢伙”，rotten apple也是這個意思。而one bad apple spoils whole bunch有點像中文裡的一粒老鼠屎壞了一鍋粥的意思，或者說害群之馬，而 rotten to the core就是說這個傢伙壞透了。
as American as apple pie
美國人很喜歡吃 apple pie。 apple pie是一種用烤箱製作的甜點心，它的外面是一層面粉，裡面是用蘋果做的餡兒。中文有時把 apple pie翻成“蘋果排”。
美國人對apple pie的喜愛在他們從歐洲移居到美洲來以後就開始了。每個家庭主婦都經常做蘋果派。
為了說明 apple pie 是美國生活的一個特點，人們常說: "As American as apple pie." 這句話的意思是：就像蘋果排一樣具有美國特色。
舉個例子：
"So many Asian restaurants have opened up in Washington that a writer on a daily paper here jokes that dim sum, Japanese sushi and Vietnamese spring rolls have become as American as apple pie."
這句話的意思是：“華盛頓開了很多亞洲飯館，一家報紙的記者開玩笑地說，廣東點心、日本生魚片加飯糰和越南春捲都已經變成像蘋果排一樣的美國食品了。”
apples and oranges可不單純指蘋果和橘子
apple是蘋果，orange是桔子。
apples and oranges指的是兩個非常不同的事物，無法相比。
不過，在17世紀的時候，人們常說apples and oysters。
oysters是牡蠣。蘋果和牡蠣當然有天壤之別，難以比較。
後來，apples and oysters逐漸演變成了apples and oranges。
例：
It's unnecessary to argue whether American culture is better than Chinese culture. This is comparing apples and oranges as they have their own strengths.
爭論美國文化是否比中國文化好是不必要的。他們截然不同，各有自己的強處。
