Today, if you had something made in China 300 years ago, most people would be impressed too.

I'm still pretty impressed at stuff they make.

800 years ago, if you had something made in America, people would be impressed.

800 years ago, if you had something made in America, people would be like, "What the fuck is an America?".

300 years ago the East India Company was importing silk, porcelain and tea from China. The tea became so popular the government taxed it which caused some people to revolt.

I was watching family feud and one of the fast cash questions was, "what percentage of items in your home are made in China?" The lady answered 10%. I thought to myself, "wow, she has no clue!"

pmmeamilleniumfalcon

Which actually makes me sad. The global system of construction, development, trade and transport is a miracle, and most people are completely ignorant to it.

The other 90% is just from different Asian countries.

ACoderGirl

I wonder what the number really is? I wanna say ballpark 80%, but it would depend a lot on how we count things. Like, take cutlery. Is every individual fork, spoon, etc a single item? Because lots of small, simple things are Chinese made, so they'll overwhelm the rest.

China seems really disproportionately biased towards the cheap and simple goods. If you take a phone for example, many are made outside of Canada and certainly at least their components are often made in other countries.

I bet Chinese made products are at least 50%.

Fireball922

Honestly I'm amazed at 99% of the technology I have in my living room right now, and most of it probably came from China.

Economics of scale that's what. They spend hundreds of millions to get the best manufacturing equipment and pay for it by producing massive quantities

GUMBYtheOG

Actually - China was the trade Mecca - hence the opium wars - everyone had stuff from China but China didn’t want anything from the rest of the world until the got them hooked on opium

jonny_ponny

So you are saying the situation is similar to today, where the world had a trade deficit with china?

Well here is the solution for trump, best get them hooked on opium or something.

BrohanGutenburg

China was the trade leader in the world for many many centuries. They exporting things like porcelain in such large quantities it is now known as China.

speech_freedom

That's why they launched two Opium Wars, because all the gold and silver went to China. In another 60 years, Opium War III will happen.

Furthermore, a lot of companies in China are working to improve quality and developing innovative systems. The idea that Chinese stuff is crappy is a few decades old, and really only applies to goods that are cheap in the first place.. I mean what can one expect out of a knife that costs $1 anyway?
