北宋仁宗皇帝鑄天聖元寶，由於鑄期短暫則顯珍貴。史載，1022年宋真宗駕崩時，遺詔由皇太子趙禎即位，是為仁宗。趙禎時年13歲，還不懂政事，便由皇太后（明肅皇后）垂簾聽政。其年號“天聖”，拆字作“二人聖”，意為兩個聖人共同執政。然而，該錢文“天”之“夭”和“滅”的筆意，則透露出天聖年間火災遭“天譴”的史實。史載，天聖十年（1032年），仁宗朝廷大內罹“火”，延燒八殿。人傳，朝中以明肅皇后垂簾亂政，是女“夭”（妖）作怪，是為“天譴”，1033年便改元明道。
“天聖”改“明道”年號後，皇太后仍不還政於仁宗。當時就有以年號“明”之“日”代表皇帝，“月”代表太后之說。因此，該暗藏玄機的“天聖”錢應為明道元年（皇太后死於明道二年）朝廷反對派出於政治鬥爭的需要，將“天禧通寶”錢改範而鑄。但隨著太后的駕崩，此錢不久也停鑄了。
