今天我們來說兩個比較有趣的英語表達，它們都使用了比喻，非常形象。

1.steal one's thunder

先來看一組對話：

A: You're avoiding me these days. What happened?

B: Nothing. It's just...you stole my thunder at my party.

A: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do that. I just wanted everybody to enjoy your party.

A：It was MY party! You couldn't be the star!

看樣子，steal one's thunder既不是偷了我的雷，也不是搶了我的迅雷。

很多同學已經猜出來了，這個短語其實是“搶風頭”的意思。本來你才是party的主角, 大家的焦點應該都在你身上，結果有個人出來把你的“雷”給偷走了。也就是搶走了你的風頭。

還有一個相似的表達是steal the spotlight。spotlight 是聚光燈的意思，舞臺上聚光燈之下的人是萬眾矚目的主角。如果有人搶了你的主角位置，你可以義正辭嚴地對他說：You are stealing the spotlight!

2. a pain in the neck

還是先來看對話。

A: It seems that you don't like the new guy.

B: Of course I don't. He's a pain in the neck.

A: How come?

B: He's always talking about his family. It's so annoying.

看到annoying大家應該就能看出來， a pain in the neck實際上就是“令人討厭的人或事”，他們就像在你的脖子在同，非常地煩人。

看到這個短語很多同學都會想到漢語裡的“眼中釘，肉中刺”，但a pain in the neck只是表達厭惡，還沒到那麼嚴重的程度。如果真的有人成了你的眼中釘，那麼你可以說：

He's a thorn in my side.

或

He's a thorn in my flesh.

thorn [θɔrn] 是“荊棘”的意思，flesh [fleʃ] 是“肉體”的意思，嵌入身體裡的荊棘，是不是就是“肉中刺”呢，是不是很形象？
