短短的一個月，新冠肺炎疫情在中國境外不斷蔓延。情況越來越嚴峻。就在今天，世衛組織總幹事譚德賽宣佈，經過疫情評估，他們認定新冠肺炎已經構成 “全球大流行病”。
說起 “流行病”，我們就來學習一下與它相關的英文表達。
"流行病" ≠ popular disease
錯在哪裡？
先來看看 popular 的意思：
popular /ˈpɑːpjələr/ adj. 受人歡迎的；喜愛的；當紅的；通俗的
可見 popular 是一個偏向褒義的詞，流行起來的前提是大家都喜歡的。
popular music 流行音樂
popular game 受大眾喜歡的遊戲
a popular singer 一個受歡迎的歌手
disease （疾病）是一種大家都敬而遠之的東西，自然不能用popular修飾。
那麼，地道的形容 “流行病” 的形容詞，應該用什麼呢？
epidemic / pandemic
epidemic /ˌepɪˈdemɪk/ n. 流行病 adj.流行性的
pandemic /pænˈdemɪk/ n. （全國或全球性的）大流行病
這兩個單詞有點像，但是使用起來還是有區別的。
比如之前世衛組織還是覺得新冠肺炎認定為pandemic還為時過早。
The WHO have said that the coronavirus outbreak was not out of control globally nor causing large-scale deaths and so it is too early to declare it a pandemic.
使用“pandemic”一詞並不符合事實，而且會引發恐慌。我們不是生活在一個二進制的、非黑即白的世界中。這不是一個“非此即彼”的問題。我們現在要做的是加強防控，並且盡力防止 pandemic 的發生。
"Our decision about whether to use the word “pandemic” to describe an epidemic is based on an ongoing assessment of the geographical spread of the virus, the severity of disease it causes and the impact it has on the whole of society”
是否把 epidemic 宣佈為 pandemic，取決於我們對病毒在全球蔓延的持續評估，以及疾病的嚴重程度和對全社會的影響。
由此可見：
① 只要是具備傳染性的疾病，比如傳染病和流行病，都可以叫做 epidemic，例如小的流感;
② 並不是所有的epidemic都可以叫做 pandemic，只有在全球蔓延，情況嚴峻，且造成大量人員死亡的 epidemic，才可以被認定為pandemic.
美國國家過敏和傳染病研究所的所長安東尼·福奇本月早些時候告訴CNN說：“老實說，這確實是邊界語義學。我想你會聽到人們各執一詞。不同的人對pandemic有不同的理解。”
"It really is borderline semantics, to be honest with you,” Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN earlier this month. “I think you could have people arguing each end of it. Pandemics mean different things to different people.”
