在中學英語課堂上，我們會經常聽到老師的講解：當詢問某人怎麼了可以使用問句What’s the matter? 和What’s wrong?這樣的句子，為了更明確的說出某人還可以這樣來表達: What’s the matter with you? 從漢語的翻譯來看，的確這樣的表達是沒有任何問題的，但是真的是一樣的嗎？我們先來看看matter一詞的用法，matter 是中考英語的高頻考查詞彙，無論是在完型中還是在閱讀中都會以各種意思反覆出現的，所以正確的掌握理解matter一詞的用法對於中考英語來講還真的是matters a lot.
我們先來看看matter在近幾年中考出現的情況：
1. Some primary schoolchildren have been raised in homes with more green space around. They are likely to come with larger volumes of white and grey matter in certain areas of the brain. （2018北京中考）

matter 作為名詞的意思：
What’s the matter? 這一問句中， matter使用的正是名詞形式，意思是問題或情況，相當於problem， 這句話在日常對話中會經常用到: 當看到別人不開心時， 當看到別人身體不舒服時， 或者看到別人有麻煩時， 都可以關心的問道: What’s the matter? 這時使用這句話就是對他人的關心。
但如果我們說成What’s the matter with you? , 意思就會完全不一樣的喔！這句話從表面意思看與what’s the matter 並沒有太大的區別，
實際上往往含有責備的意思在裡面，也就是當別人弄砸了某件事情，你好像在說“怎麼搞的你”，也可能是在嘲笑他人“stupid”。所以千萬不要弄錯啊！2. He didn’t know whether his dad would be different, but it didn’t matter. He himself __40 changed__ . He expressed his feelings to the right person. （2015北京中考完型）
A growing number of American university students have found a way to make spring break matter. For them, joining or leading a group of volunteers to help solve problems such as homelessness or environmental damage makes spring break a special learning experience that university students can feel good about. （2016北京石景山一模）

在這三則例子中，matter 使用的則是動詞的意思：
It didn’t matter. 這沒關係.
Make spring break matter. 使春假有重要意義
在口語中我們還會經常說到 it doesn’t matter (沒關係），it doesn’t matter to me (對我來說無所謂)。這句話在不同的場合也會有不同的意思，如果不注意就往往使自己很尷尬。如下面的場景：
- 朋友們在一起討論週末的外出遊玩計劃， 基本的方案已經達成了一致， 這時禮貌地徵求你還有什麼意見，如果你說 it doesn’t matter to me , 那麼意思就是我怎麼都行，你們定好了就可以了， 給別人的感覺就是你你是個特隨和的人。
- 但當朋友們都在祝賀某位朋友獲得了某項榮譽，如果詢問你的看法，你要是來上一句it doesn’t matter to me, 你就顯得有點兒格格不入了。
除了應該注意matter的名詞、動詞以及日常用語外， 我們還應該掌握matter的一些固定短語和表達，如：
- But in real life there is a Santa in each one of us that shines through our personality at some point of time, no matter which month it is. (2014完型)
