一、except與except for區別
(1) 在意義上的區別
except主要用來談論同類的東西，而except for則主要用來談論不同類的東西，在說明情況後作細節上的修正，有時含有惋惜之意。如 ：
He gets up early everyday except Sunday.除星期天外，他每天早起。
The room was very cold and, except for Jack, entirely empty.這個房間很陰冷，而且除了傑克，完全是空蕩蕩的。
本句中，前述對象是"房間"，而除去的對象是"Jack"，兩者毫無關係。
We h Nobody like him，except his mother. Nobody 和mother是同類的，都是指人。
翻譯為:除了他媽媽，沒有人喜歡他
【例句】His novel is good except for a few spelling mistakes.
他的作文寫得不錯，只是有幾處拼寫錯誤。novel 和spelling mistakes 不是同類的。
ad a pleasant time, except for the weather. 我們玩得很高興，只是天氣不太好。
(2) 用於句首時的區別
此時只用except for，不用except。如：
Except for Jim, everyone went there. 除吉姆外，大家都去了。
(3) 兩者可以互換的場合
當用於all, every, no, everything, anybody, nobody, nowhere, whole等表示概括性的詞語後面時，兩者可互換。如：
You couldn’t hear anything except (for) the noise of Louise typing. 除了路易絲打字的聲音外，你什麼也聽不到。（可互換）
Except for(=except) John, the whole class passed the test.全班同學除約翰外，全都通過了考試。(可互換)
但是下面一句要用except for，因為其前沒有上面提到的概括性的詞語：
The house was quiet except for the noise of Louise typing. 除了路易絲打字的聲音外，房裡安安靜靜的。
二、 besides 表示一種累加的除外關係，意思是“除了什麼之外，還有……”.雖然含有“除了”之意，但是重點是“還有”，所以 besides 後面的名詞也是包括其中的。強調"除此之外，還包括"
【例句】Besides his girlfriend，his mother also went to see the movie.
翻譯為：除了他女朋友外，還有他的媽媽也去看了這個電影。即女朋友和媽媽都去看了電影。
Except for his girlfriend，his mother went to see the movie.
翻譯為：除了他女朋友外，還有他的媽媽也去看了這個電影。即女朋友沒有去看電影，而媽媽去看了電影。
Besides me, everyone is tired.
譯為：除了我很累之外，大家都很累。即我和大家都很累。
Except for me, everyone is tired.
翻譯為：除了我之外，所有人都累了。即只有我不累。
三|、關於 but 與 except：
(1) 兩者都可表示“除……外不再有……”，但含義上略有差別：but側重指意義的幾乎完整性，而 except 則側重指後面除去的部分。比較：
All are here but one. 除一個人都到了。
All are here except one. 還有一個人沒到。
（2） but 一定不能用於句首，except 通常不用於句首：
正：Everyone is tired but (except) me.
正：Everyone but (except) me is tired.
誤：But (Except) me, everyone is tired.
四、關於 except for 與 but for：
except for 主要表示排除，but for 主要表示一種虛擬條件(與虛擬語氣連用)。如：
Except for me, everyone passed the exam. 除了我之外，大家都通過了考試。
But for my help, she would not have passed the exam. 若不是我的幫助，她就不會通過考試。
But for the atmosphere plants would die. 如果沒有大氣，植物就會死亡。
五、apart from其含義主要依據上下文而定，有時可與except換用，有時可代替besides.
Apart from the coat, the hat doesn’t t suit me.除價錢太貴，這帽子也不適合我戴。
