陳友諒其人本為徐壽輝部將，長期駐守江州（今九江）。元至正十八年（公元1358年），天完大將倪文俊暗殺徐壽輝不成卻被陳友諒設伏暗殺，而陳友諒羽翼豐滿早有取代徐壽輝之意，此次內部矛盾正好使其暴露了野心。陳將徐接至江州居住，自立為“漢王”，並逐漸掌握了天完政權。
