HU Lingneng(785-826), a native of Zhongmu County, Zhengzhou, Henan Province and a poet in the Tang dynasty. He lived in reclusion in Putian (present-day Putian Village, Zhongmu County). Because of the poverty of his family, he made a living by repairing pots and pans, so he had a nickname of Hu Tinker. Being simple in language but ingenious in design, his poems are full of lifelike interest.(袁飛譯)

A Child Learning to Angle

By HU Lingneng

Tr. ZHAO Yanchun

He learns to fish, a child with tousled hair,

Smelling of grass and squatting on moss there.

To ask him the way a traveler comes by;

For fear fish be scared, he does not reply.
