be動詞的意思和用法很多，一般的意思是“是”，此種用法，有多種變化形式:am、is、are、was、were、being、been。其中最基本的用法:am、is、are用於一般現在時態，was(am和is的過去式)、were(are的過去式)用於一般過去時態，這也是小學段英語語法學習中必須掌握的。
一、be動詞用於一般現在時的三種形式:am、is、are。
1 、am 和 l(我) 連用。
例如:
l am a boy.我是一個男孩。
l am ten years old.我十歲了。
l am a student.我是一名學生。
2 、is 和單數連用 : he(他)、she(她)、it(它)和單個的人名、地名、物名。
例如:
He is a student.他是一名學生。
She is Lily.她是莉莉。
It is sunny today.今天是晴天。
My father is very tall.我的爸爸很高。
Beijing is a big city.北京是一個大城市。
The apple is red.這個蘋果是紅色的。
3 、are 和複數連用 : we(我們)、they(他們)、you (你們)和人名、地名、物名的複數。
注:you的單複數形式一樣，無論you在句中是單數意思還是複數意思，其後的be動詞只用are。
例如:
We are good friends.我們是好朋友。
They are my students.他們是我的學生。
You are a good student.你是一名好學生。
You are good friends.你們是好朋友。
Lily and Jack are classmates.莉莉和傑克是同學。
Beijing and Shanghai are big cities.北京和上海都是大城市。
The trees are tall.這些樹是高的。
二、be動詞用於一般過去時態的兩種形式:was(am和is的過去式)、were(are的過去式)。
1 、was 和單數連用 : l(我)、he(他)、she(她)、it(它)和單個的人名、地名、物名。
例如:
l /He /She was a student last year.我/他/她去年是一名學生。
Lucy was beautiful two years ogo.露西兩年前很漂亮。
Lanzhou was a big city ten years ago.十年前蘭州是一座大城市。
This book was Lily's three days ago,but now it's mine.這本書三天前是莉莉的，但是現在是我的。
2 、were 和複數連用:we(我們)、they(他們)、you(你們)和人名、地名、物名的複數。
例如:
We/They/You were students two years ago.兩年前我們/他們/你們是學生。
Jack and Sam were good friends five years ago.傑克和薩姆五年前是好朋友。
Lanzhou and Xining were beautiful three years ago.蘭州和西寧三年前很美麗。
These desks were in the library last week.這些書桌上週還在圖書館。
