Inorganic fertilizers use nutrients that are commonly found in soil and plants just in higher amounts. These fertilizers are convenient in that the proper combination of nutrients have been premixed so all you have to do is sprinkle the substance on your lawn or plants and watch them grow. They also tend to work more quickly than organic fertilizers.
Because inorganic fertilizers areapplied on top of the soil they may end up in a storm drain and get into the drinking water. According to a study done in 1999 nitrate a commonly used fertilizer can cause endocrine immune and nervous system malfunctions. Ingesting fertilizer from the bag can cause death especially in children and pets so be cautious when using the product around them. Reproductive problems have also been linked to fertilizer poisoning.
