Virus (noun)
A living thing, too small to be seen without a microscope, that causes infectious disease in animals and humans.
Queensland has recorded 61 cases of the virus, including 15 announced yesterday.
Infectious (adjective)
Being able to spread from one to another.
People who are sick with the virus may be infectious for many days and pass the virus on to others.
Coronavirus (noun)
A type of common virus that infects humans, typically leading to an upper respiratory infection.
The Victorian government has declared a state of emergency, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
COVID-19 (noun)
The official name for the novel coronavirus disease that emerged in China in 2019. COVID-19 is an acronym – COronaVIrus Disease-2019.
St Kevin's College will be closed on Tuesday after the parent of two students tested positive for COVID-19.
Novel (adjective)
The word novel means “new”, and a newly identified coronavirus strain is often called a novel coronavirus.
There are now more than 3,000 cases of the novel coronavirus in the US, according to government agencies.
Symptom (noun)
Any feeling of illness or physical or mental change that is caused by a particular disease.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough and sore throat.
Contagious (adjective)
Able to spread very easily from one person to another.
Coronavirus is most contagious before and during the first week of symptoms.
Outbreak (noun)
A time when something suddenly begins, especially a disease or something else dangerous or unpleasant.
More and more employees in Australia are being encouraged or directed to work from home in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
Epidemic (noun)
The appearance of a particular disease in a large number of people at the same time.

Pandemic (noun)
Existing in almost all of an area, or in almost all of a group of people, animals, or plants.
The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
Incubation (noun, verb)
The process of period of time in which harmful bacteria or viruses increase in size or number in a person’s or animal’s body, but do not yet produce the effects of the disease.
Using that data, the investigators found that the median incubation period of coronavirus was about 5.1 days.
Isolation (noun, verb)
Being separated from other people, towns, countries, etc.
The Governor has called for home isolation for seniors 65 and older.
Quarantine (noun, verb)
A period of time during which an animal or person that might have a disease is kept away from other people or animals, so that the disease cannot spread.
People over 70 in the UK will be quarantined for up to 4 months in a 'wartime' effort to tackle coronavirus.
Self-isolate (verb)
To keep yourself away from other people by staying at home as much as possible, to minimise exposing people to your germs. To quarantine yourself.
People who have travelled to high-risk countries and people who have been in contact with a known case of COVID-19 have been asked to enter a period of self-isolation.
Social distancing (verb)
The practice of encouraging people to minimize contact and closeness to other people, by avoiding crowds.
Best practice of social distancing requires maintaining at least a six-foot distance between yourself and others.
