and的用法
用法一：
and表示同時發生的動作，或同時存在的屬性、特徵。
譯為“和”“又”“而”等。
- The process of oxidation in human body gives off heat slowly and regularly。
- 人體內氧化的過程緩慢而有規律地釋放熱量。
- If a body is acted upon by a number of forces and still remains motionless, the body is said to be in equilibrium。
- 如果一個物體受到幾個力的作用而仍然保持靜止，那麼該物體處於平衡狀態。
用法二：
and表示不能同時並存的事物或動作。
譯為"或"。
例如：
- The whole equipment can be assembled and dismantled in a matter of hours。
- 整套設備可以在幾小時內安裝或拆卸完畢。
用法三：
and表示條件，相當於if…then。
譯為“如果……那麼……”
例如：
- Do that again and I’ll call a policeman. 你再這樣做我就要叫警察了。
- Go at once, and you will catch up with them. 快去，那樣你就會趕上他們。
用法四：
and表示結果， and=so that, 譯為"因此"、"所以"、"從而"等。
- Sound is carried by air, and without air there can be no sound。聲音靠空氣傳播，因此沒有空氣也就沒有聲音。
- He fell heavily and broke his arm. 他摔得很重，手臂都摔斷了。
用法五：
and表示因果關係，將表示原因的部分放在and之後，這時and=because
譯為"因為"。
例如：
- Aluminium is used as the engineering material for planes and spaceships and it is both light and tough。
- 因為鋁質輕而韌性好，所以被用作製造飛機和宇宙飛船的工程材料。
用法六：
and表示一種同位關係
譯為"即"、"也是"
- When correcting, pay close attention to the seventh and last paragraph in the translation。改稿時請密切注意譯文的第七段，即最後一段。
- We have come to the last and most important step of the experiment。
- 我們的實驗現在已經到了最後一個也是最重要的一個階段。
用法七：
and表示目的關係，雖然連接兩個動詞但並不表示並列。
- Allow me to go and measure the pressure again。請允許我再測一次壓力。
- He told me that he would come and help with our design when his work was over。他告訴我，他忙完後，會來幫助我們進行設計。
用法八：
and 在數學中的不同含義
- 表示相加：One and two is three.一加二等於三。
- 表示帶分數：On the average, oceans are two and one third miles deep。海洋的平均深度為二又三分之一英里。
- 表示數字範圍：在"between +數字+ and +數字"的短語中，and等於介詞to,譯為"到"，或用破折號或波浪號來表示。例如，The lamp lights when the transistor temperature probe is connected to the rear panel and its temperature is between -20~60’C。當晶體管測溫器接到後板上並且其溫度在-20度到60度之間時，這盞燈就亮了。
- 表示相乘：在the product of ... and ...的搭配中表示"相乘"，如：The area of a triangle is equal to half the product of the base and the perpendicular height。三角形的面積等於二分之一底乘高。
用法九：
and表示連續性或程度的加深
譯為“一再地，重複地，繼續增加地”
- cough and cough 咳個不停
- The patient is getting worse and worse。患者的病情在不斷惡化。
- The power output becomes lower and lower by overloading。超負荷造成功率輸出越來越低。
用法十：
and連接同義詞
例如：
- We completely and totally agree to the project put forward by them。我們完全同意他們提出的方案。
- The end and aim of the book is explained in the preface。本書的宗旨在前言中作了說明。
用法十一：
and表示加強語氣，重複整個句子加強語氣
例如：
- We need to know and we need to know as much as possible in order to adapt to the sort of changes in all aspects of science that will fall upon us like a tidal wave。為了適應各個科學領域發生的巨大變化，我們需要大量的知識。
用法十二：
and表示對比或轉折
譯為“儘管……還”，“卻”，“還”
例如：
- Tom's 15 and still sucks his thumb. 湯姆15歲了，還嘬大拇指。
- He aimed at the bird and missed it. 他瞄準那隻鳥卻沒打中。
用法十三：
and用在少數動詞後表目的
例如：
- Come and have tea with me. 過來和我一起喝杯茶。

and all：全都,等等total; complete
- Peter dipped his whole head under, hat and all.彼得連同帽子把整個頭都浸在水裡。
