Commonly known as copper plate, copper yuan is the common name for all kinds of new copper COINS cast since the end of qing dynasty. Copper dollar is an important component of China's modern monetary system. The Chinese copper coin was born in 1889, which is the beginning of the title "mechanism currency" in the history of Chinese coin. There is no hole in the middle of the copper COINS, which is made by imitation of Hong Kong copper COINS. Therefore, the appearance is different from the square hole copper COINS of the past dynasties. The birth of copper yuan marks that China's metal coin casting technology has entered a new stage of advanced machine production from the traditional manual sand casting.

At the beginning of qing dynasty, the copper COINS were written as "guangxu yuan treasures". There were no uniform standards for casting COINS in various provinces, and there were considerable differences in coloring styles. The cast copper can be divided into several kinds according to the composition of various copper alloys. Copper and brass are more common than copper. After the founding of the republic of China, copper COINS continued to be widely circulated.

In 1914, after the founding of the republic of China, copper COINS were officially renamed as "copper COINS". The biggest difference between the copper COINS issued in the republic of China and qing dynasty was that the dragon grain was replaced with the grain of jiahe composed of rice ears. Most of the COINS minted in the provinces are two-pronged national flag designs with the words "founding COINS" or "republic of China COINS".
