英語中，一個定冠詞“the”的有無就可以把句子的意思完全改變。我們看下面的幾組詞語：
1．in hospital：因病住院
in the hospital：在醫院裡（工作，探望病人等，不一定是病人）
2．go to school：去上學（學生）
go to the school：到學校去（不一定是學生）
3．go to bed：去睡覺（困了或者到睡覺的時間了）
go to the bed：向床邊走去，走到床前（不一定是睡覺）
4．at table：吃飯
at the table：在桌子旁邊
5．in front of：在（……外部的）前面
in the front of：在（……內部的）前面
6．in class：在上課
in the class：在班級裡
7．by sea：乘船
by the sea：在海邊
8．on earth：究竟
on the earth：在地球上
9．in charge of：掌管，負責
in the charge of：在……負責之下
10.take place：發生，舉行
take the place：代替，接替
大家要熟練掌握這些詞組的意義，考試中不能因為一個小小的定冠詞“the”而造成失分。另外，我們在寫作文的時候也可以用上這些詞組，同樣需要小心定冠詞“the”有無。英語跟漢語一樣，都有很多有趣的現象，等著大家去探索，去發掘。
