1980年12月8日，馬克·查普曼偽裝成一個歌迷，在列儂的公寓旁邊徘徊了很久。那天晚上，當列儂從錄音棚返回家中的時候，查普曼請列儂在他的簽字本上簽名。當時他內心曾進行過激烈的鬥爭，但最後仍然舉起手槍朝著列儂的後背連開了4槍。 和Moonlight Shadow中所寫的He was shot six times by a man on the run類似。但看了原版的MTV之後，這首歌應該和John Lennon的被刺並沒有直接聯繫，似乎男主角死於一場決鬥中，這倒象是普希金。
