[Souza] #Celtics Kyrie Irving on his time in Cleveland: they didn't hand me the keys there. They shouldn't have. I was too young. I had to learn to be a leader. I'd compete, but had to learn how to be competed against. (Credited being teammates w/ LeBron James for helping him do that)

I thought these comments are interesting considering all the narratives going around about Kyrie and Cleveland, etc. Some people have said that he took shots at Cleveland, here it seems like he's putting some of the onus on himself to grow into that leadership role and develop and thanking his Cavs teammates for growing into that role

A mature take

Interesting how he talks about competed against. Never thought about it that way.

Its probably a shock when you are always THE MAN... and then suddenly you are a very clear distant 2nd to one of the all time greatest. Everyone is in the shadow when playing with Lebron. Not easy for everyone to handle that.

Can you ELI5? I don't really get what he means by that?

He knew how to give his best shot but he had to learn about taking every one else's best shot and still being better than them. It's not good enough to put up big numbers in a loss

Kyrie is just lucky he jumped ship before LeBron did and even luckier he was sent to Boston and not the Suns or Knicks.

right? easy to be all mature and reflective when you move from one nearly perfect playing situation to an arguably even more perfect playing situation, through no real effort of your own lol

Not quite true, he earned opposing team's interest with his stellar play. And he tanked his value by preemptively warning teams of the small group he'd re-sign with. Bold moves beget bold outcomes. And let's not all act as if Boston was a lock for being that good last year. They had like 4 guys returning from the previous season.

Looking back on the last 7-8 years for our franchise, I think everything worked out for the best. We lost LeBron, we tanked, we got a young star in Kyrie, and he was our future. He was going to grow into being a superstar in Cleveland and be the face of our franchise for many years.

Then we got LeBron back and won a title, but in the process Kyrie felt like he couldn't grow into his own. And that's ok, he was a young guy trying to figure out how to be happy and fulfilled, and he felt like that wasn't happening in Cleveland with LeBron around.

Sure he did and said some immature things, but he was young and immature. Can't blame the guy at all for feeling like he needed a change in direction in his life.

Had LeBron not come back, I think Kyrie would still be in Cleveland and (probably) happy. We'd have a bright future assuming we made some other good moves. But we also wouldn't have a title, and that made everything worth it.

OKC had 3 MVP calibre players before their primes and didn't win a championship. Now they most likely won't ever.

Whatever happened in Cleveland last 4 years was best possible result.

Honestly worked out way better for Kyrie anyway. Got a ring in Cleveland by beating potentially the greatest team of all-time and now gets to be the man on a stacked team of a historical franchise in a bigger city.

"I tried to do whatever I could do to help the kid out, be the best player that he could be. I tried to help him be a better leader, a better scorer, a better floor general, a better defender, a better passer getting guys involved, a better vocally. I tried to give him everything, and give him as much of the DNA as I could because like I told you guys throughout the season, at some point, when he was ready to take over the keys, I was ready to give them to him.” - LeBron James

That's the whole odd part about the situation — this is what LeBron seemed like he wanted for, and was grooming him for, Kyrie.

But I guess it boils down to the fact that he wasn't either getting enough credit, it wasn't happening fast enough for him so he wanted out to find it for himself or he's realizing all of this after the fact and that the situation wasn't ultimately that bad.

The fortunate reality for him is that he fell into an even better situation after all of that so there's no remorse over how things turned out.
