number即可以作名词表示数；（杂志等的）期；号码；数字；算术，也可以作vi. 计入，表示；总数达到，和作为vt. 编号；计入；数…的数目；使为数有限。
今天我们讲的number, 主要是它作为名词的搭配和用法。主要包括 a number of 和the number of。
a number of
a number of ：表示若干，许多，一些。 后面通常跟可数名词复数或者代词或者集合名词，其后的谓语动词也要用动词的复数形式。
如：
And with half habits, you can effectively take on a number of habits without feeling any pressure!
于是用半习惯， 你可以高效地采取一些习惯而不感到任何压力！
One could write a book on this a topic, and in fact, a number of people have!
也许有人会撰写关于这个主题的书，但实际上，已经有许多人这样做了！
On our table in the garden we put a blue card, and all around this blue card we put a number of different gray cards.
我们把一张蓝色的卡片放到花园里的桌子上，再在这张蓝色卡片的周围放上若干张不同的灰色卡片。
** a number of 的number前面还可以用形容词来修饰，表示数量大或小等。

the number of
the number of: 表示“.......的数量或者数目”，其中心词number，后面加名词的复数形式，但是谓语动词用单数。
如：
The number of them is getting smaller and smaller, because hunters kill them for their tusks .
它们的数目正在变得越来越少，因为猎人杀掉他们，因为他们的长牙。
The number of events to be contested in each sport is indicated in parentheses .
把事件的数量将在每一个有争议的运动是在括号内表示。
But the price is that the number of churches is increasing.
不过，付出的代价是这类教会的数目不断增加。
