首相进ICU,女王吁抗疫

词条解释:

ICU:Intensive care unit 重症监护室(医)

Commonwealth:此文指英联邦

NHS:National Health Service 此文指英国国家医疗服务体系

Britons:英国人,大不列颠人

电视讲话全文如下:

“I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time. A time of disruption(破坏) in the life of our country: a disruption that has brought grief(悲伤) to some, financial difficulties to many, and enormous(ɪ'nɔːməs 巨大的) changes to the daily lives of us all.

I want to thank everyone on the NHS front line, as well as care workers and those carrying out (执行)essential roles(要职), who selflessly continue their day-to-day(日复一日的) duties outside the home in support of us all. I am sure the nation will join me in assuring you that what you do is appreciated(令人感激的) and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times.

I also want to thank those of you who are staying at home, thereby (由此,因而)helping to protect the vulnerable(弱者) and sparing many families the pain (spare +sb.(间接宾语)+ sth. (直接宾语);免除了某人...,此处是指避免了很多家庭的痛苦)already felt by those who have lost loved ones. Together we are tackling(着手解决...) this disease, and I want to reassure(保证) you that if we remain united and resolute(['rezəluːt]坚决,果断), then we will overcome it.

I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in (因...而自豪)how they responded to this challenge. And those who come after us(后来者,子孙) will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any. That the attributes (属性,品质特征)of self-discipline(自律), of quiet good-humoured resolve(泰然自若,也有人翻译成“乐观”) and of fellow-feeling

(替别人着想)still characterise (塑造,刻画)this country. The pride in who we are is not a part of our past, it defines our present and our future.

The moments when the United Kingdom has come together to applaud(给...鼓掌) its care and essential workers will be remembered as an expression of our national spirit; and its symbol will be the rainbows drawn by children.

Across the Commonwealth and around the world, we have seen heart-warming stories of people coming together to help others, be it (虚拟语气的倒装结构,它们可能是...,是...或者是...)through delivering food parcels and medicines, checking on neighbours, or converting businesses to help the relief effort.

And though self-isolating may at times be hard, many people of all faiths(有宗教信仰的人), and of none(此处指无宗教信仰的人), are discovering that it presents an opportunity to slow down, pause and reflect(反省), in prayer or meditation(冥想).

It reminds me of(使我想起...)the very first broadcast I made, in 1940, helped by my sister. We, as children, spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated(疏散,撤离) from their homes and sent away for their own safety. Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones. But now, as then(和那时一样),we know, deep down(深深地), that it is the right thing to do.

While(此处意思是“虽然”) we have faced challenges before, this one is different. This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour(努力), using the great advances of science and our instinctive(天生的) compassion (关爱,怜悯)to heal. We will succeed and that success will belong to every one of us.

We should take comfort(放宽心) that while(尽管) we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again.

But for now, I send my thanks and warmest good wishes to you all.
