Blue rivers restored in Xinjing Town

Xinjing Town, which has the most waterways in Changning, has been making an effort to combat water pollution and clean up several of the district’s rivers.

Led by river chiefs, clean-up plans have been made for each river and waterway, including dredging polluted rivers, removing floating pollutants, building separate sewage and rainwater pipes, as well as demolishing illegal riverbank structures.

Net fishing is also prohibited. Party members regularly patrol the 32 water courses in a bid to clamp down on illegal activities that lead to water pollution.

Cadres and Party members also improve the environment along the banks to build riverside green communities.

One of the major waterways, Xinyupu, is no longer polluted and odorous. The 2.4 kilometer river between Xinjinggang and Guangshun River was previously one among the 56 heavily polluted waterways in the city.

Measures have been taken, including dredging rivers, removing floating pollutants and the introduction of water plants to create a stable and bio-diversified aquatic ecosystem.

Around 95 percent of the riverside residents are satisfied with the improvement.

The neighboring Xinjinggang, which joins Suzhou Creek in the north and Dianpu River in the south, was also one among the city’s 56 heavily polluted rivers.

Aquatic plants help purify the 4.2 kilometer river. More than 97 percent of the people who live nearby are now satisfied with the water quality.

Blood bank saves girl with rare disease

A nine-year-old girl with a rare immune disorder received a stem cell transplant using umbilical-cord blood from the Changning-based Shanghai Cord Blood Bank.

The girl, nicknamed Lele, from Zhejiang Province, had been plagued by a range of skin, mouth and respiratory maladies. Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with hyper IgE syndrome, a rare immunodeficiency disorder. Only 200 cases of the disorder have been recorded, and less than 10 have been reported in China, said Zhai Xiaowen, deputy head of the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University.

“We thought our daughter was just weak and vulnerable to getting infections. We had taken her to see medical experts on skin problems in both Hangzhou and Shanghai. But they just said she had skin inflammations,” Lele’s father said.

“We didn’t realize it was such a severe problem until she suffered severe pneumonia last May. She was hospitalized seven times but didn’t get better. Doctors suspected there was something wrong with her immune system.”

In April, Lele’s parents brought her to the children’s hospital. There the girl was diagnosed with a genetic condition which causes the body to produce excessive amounts of the blood antibody IgE.

“There was no other way to cure her except a hematopoietic stem cell transplant,” said Wang Xiaochuan, head of the hospital’s immunology department.

Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are less prone to rejection than those from adult bone marrow, according to Zhai.

Matching donor cells were found on May 2 at the Shanghai Cord Blood Bank.

Lele received the transplant. According to Zhai, it could take three to six months for Lele to develop a healthy immune system.

Founded by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner in 1996, the San Diego-based multinational company will place another pin on its expanding map when a Stone Brewing on-premise location opens in Shanghai later this month.

The 400 square meter Stone Brewing Tap Room – Shanghai will be at 1107 Yuyuan Road in Changning, and seat 90 indoors and 28 outdoors, with live music on weekends.

The decision comes after months of overtures toward China, which began with an initial shipment last October, an official launch last December and recent visits from top-level Stone leaders for a tap takeover at Shanghai's World of Beer.

In entering China, Stone (the eighth-largest craft-brewery in the United States by production volume as of the end of last year) is taking a much more calculated, smaller-scale approach.

Rather than produce beer in China, Stone has established a distribution plan that will ensure its beer is kept cold from its warehouses, over the lengthy voyage across the Pacific, all the way to its end destinations.

Stone is also considering opening additional locations, as well. Sources within the company note Hong Kong and Beijing (which recently hosted the fourth edition of the popular Beijing Invitational Craft Beer Festival) have been discussed along with constructing one or more venues in Shanghai.

These sites will be branded tasting rooms offering fare similar to the world-inspired menu items at its Southern California restaurants.
