詞始於唐，盛於宋，是一種膾炙人口的文學表達形式，歷來為人們所鍾愛。
宋代大文學家蘇軾公元1076年（宋神宗熙寧九年）中秋在密州（今山東省諸城市）時所作《水調歌頭·明月幾時有》。這首詞以月起興，與其弟蘇轍七年未見之情為基礎，圍繞中秋明月展開想象和思考，把人世間的悲歡離合之情納入對宇宙人生的哲理性追尋之中，現出作者熱愛生活與積極向上的樂觀精神。詞作上片望月問天，逸興壯思，意境高遠。下片懷人，由月的陰晴圓缺聯想到人間的悲歡離合。全詞意境豪放，以月比興，真情眷戀，浪漫悠長，語言瀟灑有如行雲流水，舒捲自如，情與景融，境與思偕，境界高逸，哲理和情趣兼備，是蘇軾詞的典範之作。
宋代文學家胡仔曾說：“中秋詞，自東坡《水調歌頭》一出，餘詞盡廢。”更有宋代詩人胡寅在《酒邊集序》中評論道：“一洗綺羅香澤之態，擺脫綢繆宛轉之度，使人登高望遠，舉首而歌，而逸懷浩氣，超然乎塵垢之外。”

丙辰中秋，歡飲達旦，大醉作此篇，兼懷子由。
《水調歌頭》： 明月幾時有？把酒問青天。不知天上宮闕、今夕是何年？我欲乘風歸去，惟恐瓊樓玉宇，高處不勝寒。起舞 弄清影，何似在人間？ 轉朱閣，低綺戶，照無眠。不應有恨、何事長向別時圓？人有悲歡離合，月有陰晴圓 缺，此事古難全。但願人長久，千里共蟬娟。

丙辰年的中秋節，盡興喝酒直到第二天早晨，大醉詩興起，寫了這首詞，同時思念弟弟蘇轍。
明月從什麼時候才開始出現的？我端起酒杯遙問蒼天。不知道在天上的宮殿，今天晚上是何年何月。我想要乘御清風回到天上，又恐怕在美玉砌成的樓宇，受不住高聳九天的寒冷。翩翩起舞玩賞著月下清影，哪裡比得上人間？
月兒轉過硃紅色的樓閣，低低地掛在雕花的窗戶上，照著沒有睡意的自己。明月不該對人們有什麼遺憾吧，為什麼偏在人們離別時才圓呢？人有悲歡離合的變遷，月有陰晴圓缺的轉換，這種事自古來難以周全。只希望這世上所有人的親人能平安健康，即便相隔千里，也能共享這美好的月光。
