《鬼谷子》是縱橫家最重要的典籍之一，側重的是權謀策略以及言談辯論的技巧。下面，我們用漢英兩種需要來欣賞一下。
1.是故聖人一守司其門戶，審察其所先後，度權量能，校其伎巧短長。
Therefore, the sage should always grasp the key to the development and change of things, measure the wisdom of the other side, measure the ability of the other side, and then compare the strengths and weaknesses of skills.
所以，聖人要始終把握事物發展變化的關鍵，度量對方的智謀，測量對方的能力，再比較技巧方面的長處和短處。
2.夫賢、不肖、智、愚、勇、怯，有差，乃可捭，乃可闔；乃可進，乃可退；乃可賤，乃可貴：無為以牧之。
There is a difference between good and evil, between wisdom and folly, between universality and cowardice. All of these can be open or closed. You can go up, you can go down. Can despise, can respect, must depend on doing nothing to control these.
至於賢良和不肖，智慧和愚蠢，通用性和怯懦，都是有區別的。所有這些，可以開放，也可以封閉。可能進升，也可以辭退。可以輕視，也可以敬重，要靠無為來掌握這些。
3.審定有無與其實虛，隨其嗜慾以見其志意，微排其所言，而捭反之，以求其實，實得其指，闔而捭之，以求其利。
They are examined for what they have and what they have, and their aspirations and desires are revealed by the analysis of their preferences and desires. Appropriately derogate the other party's words, when they open up again and again, in order to explore the truth, grasp the other party's words and deeds of purpose, let the other party first closed then open, in order to seize the favorable opportunity.
考察他們的有無與虛實，通過對他們嗜好和慾望的分析來揭示他們的志向和意願。適當貶抑對方所說的話，當他們開放以後再反覆考察，以便探察實情，切實把握對方言行的宗旨，讓對方先封閉而後開放，以便抓住有利時機。
4.或開而示之，或闔而閉之。
Or open it up and make it appear; Or close it so it's hidden.
5.開而示之者，同其情也；闔而閉之者，異其誠也。
Openness makes it manifest because it has the same taste; The reason for concealment is that sincerity is not the same.
開放使其顯現，是因為情趣相同；封閉使之隱藏，是因為誠意不一樣。
