牛津詞典對於介詞的解釋如下圖：
介詞(Prepositions)主要用於名詞或代詞之前，表示事物之間在地理位置，時間或者方式方法。介詞可以為一個單獨的詞如in，也可以是一組詞如on behalf of。
常用介詞：
Preposition of place表示地理位置的介詞
1.1 In
In主要用於表示“在一個大的區域之內”或者“在一個空間之內”
The Forbidden City is in Beijing.
紫禁城在北京。
【此處Beijing就是一個“大的區域”】
Roc is reading a book in his study.
Roc在他的書房看書。
【his study就是一個“空間”】
1.2 At
At主要用於表示“具體的地點”
There is a lecture at the bookstore.
在這個書店有一場講座。
【the bookstore就是一個“具體的地點”】
1.3 On
On用於表示“附著於物體表面”“在附近”“在某個位置”等
There is a phone on the table.
桌子上有一個手機。
【on the table即表示“附著於表面”】
I want to have a house on the sea.
我想在海邊有一座房子。
【on the sea並不是在海面上，而是在海的附近】
The school is on the left of the street.
這所學校就在路的左邊。
【on the left of即表示“在某個位置”】
1.4 Above and Over
Above表示“higher than”，意為“高於某物”即“在某物上方”，但不一定是“正上方”。其反義詞是below，表示“在某物下方”，但不一定在“正下方”
A helicopter is hovering above the square.
一架直升飛機正在廣場上空盤旋。
【直升飛機並不是在廣場正上方，所以用above】
There is a football below the desk.
桌子下面有一個足球。
【足球不一定在桌子正下方，所以用below】
Over也表示“higher than”，意為“高於某物”即“在某物上方”，且在“正上方”。其反義詞是under，表示“在某物下方”，且在“正下方”
There is a clock over the door.
房門的上方有個鍾。
【鍾就在房門的正上方，所以用over】
The cat is under the bed.
那隻貓在床下面。
【貓在床的正下方，所以用under】
當我們不強調某物是否在另一物的正下方的時候，可以使用under、below、underneath或beneath.
There is a puppy under / below / underneath /beneath the table.
桌子下面有一隻小狗。
1.5 On top of
On top of表示“在某物頂上”
The squirrel is sitting on top of the tree.
有隻松鼠坐在樹頂。
1.6 Between
Between表示“在兩者之間”
The school is between the bookstore and the post office.
學校在書店和郵局中間。
1.7 Next to, Beside and Near
Next to和Near都可以用來表示“附近”。不過next to和beside強調位置，而near強調距離。
Roc is sitting next to / beside Sara.
Roc坐在Sara旁邊。
The bank is near the supermarket.
銀行在超市附近。
1.8 In front of and Behind
In front of表示“在某物前面”且是在“外部”的前面。與之相對應的in the front of表示在“內部“的前面。
The tree is in front of the house.
樹在房子前面。
【樹在房子外面的前面】
The tree is in the front of the house.
樹在房子前面。
【樹在房子裡面的前面】
Behind表示“在某物後面”
Roc is standing behind the wall.
Roc站在牆後面。
1.9 Opposite
Opposite表示“在對面”
Roc sits opposite Sara at work.
Roc工作時坐在Sara對面。
