Imposing Ancient Building Complex

Mount Qiqu is a treasure place where Zitong people have built ancestral memorials and temples. "The surrounding wood gives it peace and seclusion, the mountain its imposing grandeur, water its profundity", this is the beauty that features the temple in the Wenchang Ancestor Court. And the grand temple of Mount Qiqu sits in such a picturesque spot.

It is because that Emperor Wenchang turned into an immortal here that the grand temple built on Mountain Qiqu is not only enormous in scale but dates back to quite early times. It is recorded that, this temple was first built in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, expanded in the Southern Song Dynasty and completed in the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, making it an immense ancient building complex of now well-preserved palaces, houses, towers and pavilions located at 20-odd places, covering an area of nearly 30,000 square meters.

Among these buildings are the Pantuo Place of the Yuan Dynasty; Tianzun Palace, Jiaqing Hall, Guixiang Palace, Fengdong Tower and Baite Palace, Emperor Guan Temple, Wangshui(Water-watch)Pavilion, Qisheng Palace, Jin Cypress & Rock Rail, Observatory ( eight trigram well) of the Ming Dynasty; the Front Main Palace, Baichi(100-feet) Tower, Plague God Palace, Dream-come-true Fairy Terrace, Sanqing Palace, Holy Father Palace, Bell Tower, Drum Tower of the Qing Dynasty; Shiyu (timely rain) Pavilion; Jin Cypress Pavilion, Thunder God Temple, Mountain-gate-god Tower, and palaces in the Water Guanyin scenic area built after the founding of the PRC.

Taken as a whole, the complex is exact in structure, well placed, fitting well into the topography of the mountain, with buildings varying in style but each showing its unique beauty and ingenious craftsmanship. It is a combination of the official and folk construction art, blending the architectural art featuring grandeur and solemnness in the north with the building style of the splendid gardens of the south. The grandness of the Baichi Tower, the solemnness of the Front Main Palace, the ancient simplicity of the Putuo Palace, exquisiteness of the Plague God Palace, they all present superb architectural art. Consequently, this place has been renowned as "a museum of ancient buildings" since ancient times. In addition, housed in these palaces and other buildings are numerous precious auxiliary relics such as iron-cast images, engraving art works, calligraphies and painting by celebrated historic figures, rare and valuable ancient trees, tablet couplets from the various dynasties, all impressed with historical marks, and glittering together with these ancient buildings, and contributing to the richness of the latter.

During the Anti-Japan War, Chinese famous expert on ancient architecture came to Zitong for investigation, and later in his a History of Chinese Architecture he dedicated a special subject to introduce the grand temple in Zitong, giving it high recognition.

To better protect the ancient architectural complex, as early as in 1990s, the grand temple of Mount Jiuqu was already listed among the key national relics units under protection, and the State has allocate huge funds to maintain the old rundown buildings. The time-honored palaces were lucky enough to come across such lucky days to survive intact into the 21st century.

Yan Zuxin, a poet of the Qing Dynasty wrote a poem to sing high praise of the perfect combination of the ancient buildings and cypresses in the grand temple of Mount Qiqu: "Worshippers ascend to the summit to pay homage to Emperor Wenchang and the uphill path takes them 7 circles around the mountain. The breeze of osmanthus fragrance oozes from the rock cave, and the breeze and rain flicker the vine bed. At dawn, out of the lonely peak appears a monk, his voice is as if produced from a musical stone. The spring grass shade is so inviting, all nestling by the peak in the early hours of morning ."
