我們今天就一起來看一看作為reasoning的一種形式的cause and effect這種寫作手法可以如何分析。

1 識別cause and effect的方法
cause and effect相對於其他的寫作手法比較隱蔽。它並不像列數字，舉例子顯得比較明顯。對於它的識別，需要我們不僅能夠讀懂文章字面的意思，而且也要求我們可以看出句子之間的因果邏輯關係。
如果段落中出現了表示因果關係的標誌詞（比如，therefore, as a result等），我們可以通過參考這些標誌詞進行識別。如果段落中並沒有出現這類的標誌詞，我們則可以關注段落中是否出現了存在時間先後差異的不同事件。雖然先後發生的事件之間不一定有必然的因果關係，但當我們看到存在時間先後差異的兩個或多個事件時，應去探究它們之間是否存在因果聯繫。
以《The Official SAT Study Guide》（2018 Edition）第二套練習題第一段為例，本篇文章是Martin Luther King, Jr.先生的一個演講節選，第一段講述了一個poverty program的出現讓窮人們有了希望。但因為美國參加越戰，用於幫助窮人的資源減少了，poverty program最終失敗了。King在敘述的過程中並沒有使用明顯的表示因果關係的詞彙，但我們通過閱讀會發現poverty program的出現，poverty program的失敗和越戰的發生這三個事件是存在時間先後上的差異，而我們也的確發現了poverty program最終的失敗和美國參加越戰之間的因果關係。
2 分析cause and effect的範例
First and foremost, cause-and-effect reasoning serves as the first pillar of the convincingness of King’s speech. For example, in paragraph 1, King points out that “[it] seemed as if …through the poverty program.” He then proceeds to reveal that as a result of the “buildup in Vietnam”, this program was “broken and eviscerated”. Finally, he identifies the reason behind the failure of the poverty program: “America would never invest … suction tube.” In this way, he demonstrates the causality between the Vietnam War and the disregard for the poor. Having presented the culprit in the failure of the poverty program, King appeals to his audience’s sense of justice and effectively galvanizes opposition to the Vietnam War. Evidently, the cause-and-effect reasoning is highly compelling as it helps the audience understand why the Vietnam War is “an enemy of the poor”, making King’s argument objective and rational rather than a blind assertion.
3 分析cause and effect的範例解析
根據上文的範例，我們看出，在宏觀上看，cause and effect的主體段結構和分析很多其他寫作手法分析的主體段一樣，可以由三個模塊構成：
點明即將分析的寫作手法（第1句）
從題目文章中摘錄該寫作手法（第2-3句）
分析該寫作手法（第3-5句）
第一個模塊，也就是本段的主題句，簡短清晰即可。在第二個模塊中摘錄寫作手法時，
我們可以先將段落中的因果邏輯鏈進行提取。比如，範例中的邏輯鏈為：poverty program的出現給窮人帶來希望→美國參加越戰→美國將原本可以給窮人的資源投入越戰→poverty program失敗。當我們清楚了邏輯鏈中的元素後，我們可以將這些元素從題目文章中摘錄並引述到我們的作文中來。在第三個模塊“分析寫作手法”中，範例使用了三句話進行分析。在第一句話中，我們提煉“因”和“果”，並點明它們之間的因果關係。在第二句話中，我們嘗試分析這樣的因果關係對於讀者會產生的影響（範例中：…, King appeals to his audience’s sense of justice and effectively galvanizes opposition to the Vietnam War）。這裡的影響可以體現在讀者的思考，心情和行為三個方面。在本段的最後，我們從cause and effect作為一個寫作手法本身所具有的特點進行分析（範例中：… making King’s argument objective and rational rather than a blind assertion ），並概括本段分析的寫作手法所在題目文章中段落的分論點（範例中：the Vietnam War is “an enemy of the poor”）。如果我們將上文中主體段的構成細化，可以得到如下的結構：1. 點明即將分析的寫作手法（第1句）

4 分析cause and effect的語言
在分析cause and effect這種寫作手法時，我們可以參考如下的一些語言點：
demonstrate/present the causality / causal relationship / the causal linkage / the causal connection between 原文概述（因） and 原文概述（果）
identify the (root) cause of… / the main culprit in … / the rationale behind … / the reason behind …
the cause-and-effect reasoning is highly compelling as it helps the audience understand why 題目文章分論點, making the essayist’s argument objective and rational rather than a blind assertion.
Through cause-and-effect reasoning, the writer appeals to his audience’s logic, presents himself to it as a reasonable writer and therefore establishes his trustworthiness.
