此詩大約是許渾於公元849年（唐宣宗大中三年）任監察御史的時候所寫。此時大唐王朝已經處於風雨飄搖之際，政治非常腐敗，農民起義此起彼伏。一個秋天的傍晚，詩人登上咸陽古城樓觀賞風景，即興寫下了這首七律。
咸陽古城樓
To climb up a hundred feet of tall buildings leads me to a thousand miles of nostalgia. The reed willow is like the sandbar in his hometown.
Dark clouds just floated on the side of the stream, and the setting sun had sunk behind the pavilion. The mountain rain is coming, the wind is rustle in the full building.
The palace of the Qin and Han Dynasties, a piece of desolation. The bird falls into the hay grass, and the autumn cicadas call the withered night.
Pedestrians do not ask about the prosperous events of the past. The capital is still the same.
《咸陽城東樓》
一上高城萬里愁，蒹葭楊柳似汀洲。
溪雲初起日沉閣，山雨欲來風滿樓。
鳥下綠蕪秦苑夕，蟬鳴黃葉漢宮秋。
行人莫問當年事，故國東來渭水流。
登上百尺高樓，引我萬里鄉愁。蘆葦楊柳叢生，好似家鄉沙洲。
烏雲剛剛浮起在溪水邊上，夕陽已經沉落樓閣後面。山雨即將來臨，滿樓風聲颯颯。
秦漢宮苑，一片荒涼。鳥兒落入亂草之中，秋蟬鳴叫枯黃夜間。
行人莫問當年繁華盛事，都城依舊，只見渭水不停東流。
