英語中有些短語是不能按字面去理解的
特別是“sporting house”
這個看起來貌似很正規的地方
如果事先不瞭解可是會出大意外的
一起學習它的意思吧~
sporting house是什麼地方？
sporting house是一個美國俚語
它其實是：“妓院；賭場”
震驚吧？！
在2018年12月份一道六級考試翻譯題：
“正在加大對體育館投資力度....”
不少同學都把體育館
錯誤的寫成：sporting house
“妓院”的英文表達除了“sporting house”
還有一個也比較特別有
那就是“cathouse”
看字面意思，你是不是又懵圈了？
這難道不是“貓窩”的意思嗎？
其實，英語中“貓窩”的表達更常用cat bed或cattery
而cathouse在口語中經常是指“妓院”
而“體育館”可以說：
gymnasium（縮寫gym）或stadium
“on the house”不是“房屋上面”
on the house 直接看字面的意思可能會理解成
“在房屋的上面”
但在日常生活中
你可能會在酒吧，飯店等地方
看到有一黑板寫著
The drinks here are on the house.
老闆的意思不是“飲料都在屋頂”
而是：這裡的酒水都是免費的。
on the house意思是：
由店家或公司負擔費用，免費
例：
A: Excuse me, How much do I owe you for dinner?
打擾一下，晚餐我欠你多少錢？
B: Don’t worry! It’s on the house.
別擔心，這是免費的。
"裝修房子"不是decorate the house
裝修房子：不是decorate the house
而是：remodel the house/apartment
remodel [ˌriːˈmɒdl] 改造、改裝(裝修)
decorate [ˈdekəreɪt] 是裝飾、佈置(點綴)
比如decorate the house with the flowers and balloons
用氣球和花裝飾房子
例：
We are going to remodel our house before the wedding.
我們會在婚禮前把家裝修一下。
"in the doghouse"不是“在狗窩裡”
這個短語的意思是
受冷落，失寵；也有丟臉、麻煩大了的意思
想象一下你讓你對象很生氣
被“趕”出臥室
不得已跟家裡狗睡在一起
換而言之因為做錯了事
受冷落，受懲罰
例：
I hate being in the doghouse all the time. I don't know why I can't stay out of trouble.
我很討厭遭受冷落，我不知道為什麼我一直在惹麻煩。
