英文中，“person”的複數形式有兩種——“people”和“persons”。那麼
1. There’re three people in the hall
2. There’re three persons in the hall
哪一個正確呢？這個簡單問題並不容易回答。
首先，“people”是集合名詞，不考慮個體，也不確定數量。日常生活中，人們早把它看作“person”的唯一複數形式；有些詞典甚至不再收錄“persons”，更有寫作教材乾脆將其作為錯誤對待。因此，第一句可能出現在同事閒聊中，此時用第二句會讓人感覺彆扭。也有人認為，在人數容易確定時也可用“persons”，但很少見。
反之，如果強調個體而不考慮群體，則用“persons”；但這一用法限於法律及正式文體，大致相當於“individuals”；在其它場合使用會有怪異、老派或不合文體的效果。如：
Seven persons were apprehended：這幾個人未必是一夥的，也不一定是同時逮捕的。
Corporations are considered persons under the U.S. Constitution：這些法人並不構成特定組織，只是多個而已。
Persons wishing to carry on hand luggage should consult the steward beforehand：這個說法比較正式，這類乘客之間並無關聯。
因此，第二句更可能出現在警察的偵查報告裡，但此時用第一句也沒有問題。
另外，歷史流傳下來的習慣用語中，仍然會用“persons”的複數形式，如：
Persons of interest
Displaced persons
Missing persons
