begin/bigin/ (began, begun, beginning) vi. vt. 开始，开始发生（同义词start)
【搭配或短语】
① begin to do 开始做：
When did you begin to learn English?
你什么时候开始学英语的？
②begin doing 开始做：
How do you usually begin washing your clothes?
你通常怎么开始洗衣服？
③ begin with 从···开始：
Let's begin with Lesson Five.
我们从第五课开始。
【辨析】
begin和start后面既可接to do, 也可接－ing, 但接 to do有如下意义：
（1)主语是物而不是人：
The ice began(started)to melt. 冰开始融化了。
（2)本身为进行时：
She is beginning(starting)to cook the dinner.
她正准备做饭。
（3)表示心理活动：
I began to understand my fault.
我开始明白我的过错。
start还有“动身、开动”的意思：
We start for Shanghai this afternoon.
我们今天下午动身去上海。
We can't start the car. 我们发动不了车了。
