重陽節，農曆九月初九，二九相重，稱為“重九”，民間在該日有登高的風俗，所以重陽節又稱“登高節”。還有重九節、茱萸、菊花節等說法。由於九月初九“九九”諧音是“久久”，有長久之意，所以常在此日祭祖與推行敬老活動。
重陽節與除、清、盂三節也是中國傳統節日裡祭祖的四大節日。
2012年12月28日，法律明確每年農曆九月初九為老年節。
