(An electric vehicle being charged. Sales in the UK accounted for only 2% of new car registrations in 2019)

That’s a great start!! I can’t see anything negative about this.

Battery production is often very damaging to the environment.
Break down of batteries is often done in countries that don''''t give a shit about the environment.

Shortages of critical metals like Kobalt and Nikkel etc.

Didn''''t see any mention about how their electrical grid is supposed to handle all the extra load from charging electric vehicles. Maybe this isn''''t as much of an issue in the UK, but in most of the US this is going to be the number one physical hurdle to encouraging electric car adoption.

Energy production isn''''t an issue in the UK currently with any reasonable projected uptake of EVs. Per-person energy consumption is on a downwards trend due to efficiency improvements and regulatory changes and over the next few decades a lot of new offshore wind plants are due to come online. We''''re also interconnected with the continental European grid.
The biggest problem is delivering the power to individual consumers who don''''t have somewhere to install a charger, but this isn''''t an insurmountable problem by any means.

Not really a problem if people charge at night - main issues in the UK are:
1) cost (no second hand market yet)
2) charging (nearly 40% of dwellings have no offstreet parking, and a larger proportion will not have an appropriate place for a charger)
General reluctance due to stubbornness will be dealt with fairly quickly if we can get the infrastructure right.
Many of the new batch of small electric cars can do 200+ miles, so the range issue is no longer an issue.

Meh, I''''ll only be really excited when they get to 400 miles.

Actually, EVs are a fantastic complement to the other major transformation that''''s happening in the UK energy which is the massive switch to offshore wind. The challenge with wind is smoothing out the highs and lows. You either export your excess, or find some way to store the energy. There are large pumped storage plants in Wales and Scotland which can help with this. But with the huge growth in wind generation it''''s nowhere near enough. We''''ll be able to leverage a widely distributed and smart-grid aware network of electric cars to charge their batteries while there is an excess of wind power and actually provide power back to the grid when there is a temporary shortage. Our world will look very different in 25 years.

The only negative thing I can think of would be if they somehow demanded subsidy/government intervention in order to fund this change, and threatened not to do it if they didn''''t get government help.
Nothing like that seems to be in the article though, so it seems positive.
It makes economic sense to invest in electric vehicles though, and will reduce their costs in the long run, so it makes sense that they''''re doing it.

The power company might have something to say bout that! I really really doubt they have the capacity to charge an entire fleet of electric vehicles.
Other than that it is awesome news. Once all vehicles are electric, we just need to figure out out to produce clean energy on a scale and consistency we need

cute_froggo
Work for a power company. We don''''t have much to say about it, really. Current capacity can handle this, and means more money for us.

Someone already pointed out their not yet practical in a real world sense. Van that''''s meant to go 250 miles only managed 70 due to it being wet and cold (heaters destroyed the battery life).
It''''s a nice idea, I hope they improve the battery tech more. I work for a haulage company and spend 200k a week on fuel. Swapping to electric would be a huge bonus... Alas there are no decent electric trucks on the market yet.

Companies "investing" does nothing to address the necessary redistribution of wealth. Environmental solutions must address both these issues to be truly green.

London is not at all representative of the UK, least of all in car use. Households in central London are much richer and much less likely to own a car than the average, and the people who do have cars in London are even higher income. Many of them probably don''''t have private parking spaces or access to a charger.
I agree that quite a few Teslas could be sold in the UK, but the BBC (other than Top Gear) generally isn''''t in the business of advertising luxury vehicles. Or any cars for that matter, but they''''re definitely not going to be promoting something that a large majority of people in the UK can''''t afford.
If you read newspapers favoured by people who can afford Teslas, you''''ll find a lot more content about them... Here''''s a series of articles about Tesla and Tesla vehicles by the FT.

But people would rather a combustion engine.

While in America: beautiful clean coal

But American private industry is pushing ahead like crazy though.
Tesla has single handedly pushed the industry ahead by 20 years. They did most of the hard work of changing the perception of what an electric car can be in the minds of the people. You remember when people thought electric cars were ugly, slow and had like 100 mile range and took 8 hours to charge.
If it were upto Volkswagen, we would still be thinking that garbage BMWi3 is the pinnacle of electric cars
Tesla is doing to car industry what Apple did to phone industry with the first iPhone. Completely reimagine and set a high bar for the rest of the industry to meet.
Most people today think the touchscreen smart phones are normal, but back then when iPhone came out, it was like some alien tech had just dropped. It was insane and I remember being blown away that we could watch movies on a phone. If you watch the event where jobs unveils the phone and goes over the features, people are literally going “ooooooh” when he says “you can listen to your voice mail in any order you want now”
That was what the phones were like back then. I have colleagues who worked at Motorola at the time, and they were like it took the management 3 years to see iPhone was real and they had to beat it. It was almost too late by then. Samsung ha reacted faster. Apparently, my friend’s VP would even ban people from bringing iPhones into the meeting, because he thought that was a toy and a fad.
The electric car industry is following now

Yeah I’m in an area where they have installed a lot of electric charging stations, but like all of no one has them nor can afford them so people who park in them just have normal cars( mind you all I do not live in the U.K.)

I do think the best way to start the transition is by changing all the buses and vehicle''''s used by government organization to electric. Like the delivery truck

That''''s great! Now if only we could get the electricity they use generated from clean sources. Most power plants are still burning oil and coal.

Good for them but what they are doing other countries been doing for the last five years
