文：先帝知臣謹慎，故臨崩寄臣以大事也。受命以來，夙夜憂嘆，恐付託不效，以傷先帝之明，故五月渡瀘，深入不毛。今南方已定，兵甲已足，當獎率三軍，北定中原，庶竭駑鈍，攘除奸兇，興復漢室，還於舊都。此臣所以報先帝而忠陛下之職分也。至於斟酌損益，進盡忠言，則攸之、禕、允之任也。
譯：先帝知道我做事小心謹慎，所以臨終時把國家大事託付給我。接受遺命以來，我早晚憂愁嘆息，只怕先帝託付給我的大任不能實現，以致損傷先帝的知人之明，所以我五月渡過瀘水，深入到人煙稀少的地方。現在南方已經平定，兵員裝備已經充足，應當激勵、率領全軍將士向北方進軍，平定中原，希望用盡我平庸的才能，剷除奸邪兇惡的敵人，恢復漢朝的基業，回到舊日的國都。這就是我用來報答先帝，並且盡忠陛下的職責本分。至於處理事務，斟酌情理，有所興革，毫無保留地進獻忠誠的建議，那就是郭攸之、費禕、董允等人的責任了。
英：The late Emperor always appreciated my meticulous caution and, as the end neared, placed his great cause in my hands. Since that moment, I have tormented myself right and day lest I prove unworthy of his trust and thus discredit his judgment. That is why I crossed the River Lu in the summer heat and penetrated the barren lands of the Man. Now, the south subdued, our arms sufficing, it behooves me to marshal our soldiers to conquer the northern heartland and do my humble best to remove the hateful traitors, restore the house of Han, and return it to the former capital. This is the way I mean to honor my debt to the late Emperor and fulfill my duty to Your Majesty. As for weighing the advantages of internal policy and making loyal recommendations to Your Majesty, that is the responsibility of Guo Youzhi, Fei Yi, and Dong Yun.
文：願陛下託臣以討賊興復之效，不效，則治臣之罪，以告先帝之靈。若無興德之言，則責攸之、禕、允等之慢，以彰其咎；陛下亦宜自謀，以諮諏善道，察納雅言，深追先帝遺詔，臣不勝受恩感激。
譯：希望陛下能夠把討伐曹魏，興復漢室的任務託付給我，如果沒有成功，就懲治我的罪過，（從而）用來告慰先帝的在天之靈。如果沒有振興聖德的建議，就責罰郭攸之、費禕、董允等人的怠慢，來揭示他們的過失；陛下也應自行謀劃，徵求、詢問治國的好道理，採納正確的言論，深切追念先帝臨終留下的教誨。我感激不盡。
英：My only desire is to obtain and execute your commission to chasten the traitors and restore the Han. Should I prove unfit, punish my offense and report it to the spirit of the late Emperor. If those three vassals fail to sustain Your Majesty’s virtue, then their negligence should be publicized and censured. Your Majesty, take counsel with yourself and consult widely on the right course. Examine and adopt sound opinions, and never forget the last edict of the late Emperor. Overwhelmed with gratitude for the favor I have received from you.
文：今當遠離，臨表涕零，不知所言。
譯：今天（我）將要告別陛下遠行了，面對這份奏表禁不住熱淚縱橫，也不知說了些什麼。
英：I now depart on a distant campaign. Blinded by my tears falling on this petition, I write I know not what.
