人的一生，吃飯、穿衣、睡覺，是任何都離不開的三件事。要吃飯就得煮飯，這是人類區別於其它生物的重要標誌之一。在英語中怎樣來表達各式各樣的烹飪方式呢？
很多同學，從小學到大學，學了十多年的英語，能說得出、寫得出的烹飪方式可能就兩三個詞。實際上，儘管西方的烹飪方式遠遠不如中餐那麼豐富，但與烹飪有關的詞彙依然不少。
（1）cook /kʊk/:烹飪，烹調，煮。如：
He cooked lunch for me. 他給我做的午餐。
（2）fry /fraɪ/:油炸；油煎；油炒。如：
Fry the potatoes, covered, for about 20 minutes.把土豆炸一下,蓋上鍋蓋燜上約20分鐘。
（3）boil /bɔɪl/:使）沸騰；煮沸；燒開。如：
Boil plenty of salted water, then add the spaghetti. 把足量的鹽水燒開，再放入意大利麵條。
（4）stew /stjuː/:燉。如：
The meat needs to stew for two hours. 這肉得燉兩小時。
（5）braise /breɪz/: （用慢火）煨，燜。如：
She was braising beef in a covered pot. 她正用一個蓋嚴的鍋燜牛肉。
（6）simmer /ˈsɪmə(r)/: 用文火燉；煨。如：
Simmer the sauce gently for 10 minutes. 把調味汁用文火燉10分鐘。
（7）poach /pəʊtʃ/: 水煮。如：
He likes a poached egg for breakfast.
（8）scramble /ˈskræmbl/: 邊攪邊炒（蛋），攤。如：
He ate some scrambled eggs. 他吃了幾個攤雞蛋。
（9）steam /stiːm/: 蒸。如：
Steam the vegetables lightly. 把蔬菜稍微蒸一下。
（10）curry /ˈkʌri/: 把……燒成咖喱菜。如：
He curried the beef. 他做了咖喱牛肉。
（11）bake /beɪk/:（在烤爐裡）烘烤；焙。如：
I'm baking a birthday cake for Alex. 我在給亞歷克斯烤生日蛋糕。
（12）roast /rəʊst/:（在烤爐裡或在火上）烤，焙（肉等）。如：
They roasted a chicken yesterday. 他們昨天烤了一隻雞。
（13）grill /ɡrɪl/: （在燒烤架的下方或上方）燒烤，炙烤。如：
Grill the sausages for ten minutes. 把香腸烤十分鐘。
（14）baste /beɪst/: 邊澆滷汁邊烤。如：
I’ll baste the meat. 我要邊燒汁邊烤這塊肉。
（15）barbecue /ˈbɑːbɪˌkjuː/: 在戶外用燒烤架燒烤。如：
He barbecued beef to treat his friends. 他用燒烤牛肉來招待他的朋友們。
