‘給面子’可不是‘give face’

lose face： 丟臉

lose face可以表示‘丟臉’， 可是外國人能明白意思，但並不地道。

當他們覺得丟臉時會這樣說：

• feel so embarrassed: 尷尬的
• feel so awkward: 尷尬的
• feel so silly: 很愚蠢
• feel disgraceful: 不光彩的

比如， 在很多人，而且還有你喜歡的人面前仰天大摔一跤，

你覺得很“丟臉”可以說：

-I felt so embarrassed when I slipped and fell in the mall in front of Sam.

在商場裡就在山姆前面我摔了一跤，好尷尬啊。

02#給面子≠give face

give face是非常中式的表達， 外國人根本聽不懂意思。而且"給面子"也是很中式的概念， 在英文中沒有完全對應的表達， 可以用意思相近的表達。

大家先試著翻譯一句話：

妻子在外面一定給足丈夫面子。

跟“給面子”意思相近的表達：

• respect: v. 尊重
• show respect: 給與尊重
• honor: v. 尊重
• give complimment： 誇獎
• flatter：v. 奉承

所以，上面這句話可以說成：

-A wife needs to respect/show respect to/honor/flatter/give compliments to her husband in front of other people.

問一問？

“他當眾批評我，一點也不給我面子”

03#挽回面子

"挽回面子“可以用“save face”， 但其實跟lose face一樣，不那麼地道。 還有比save face更貼切的表達：

redeem: 贖回， 挽回

redeem yourself: 挽回自己

Trying it again is the only way to redeem yourself.

重新來過是挽回你自己的唯一方式。

04#死要面子活受罪

在英語中沒有與“死要面子活受罪”的直譯， 但是有意義相近的表達：

• more nice than wise

There's no need to be more nice than wise.

沒必要死要面子活受罪啊。
